Clinical Nutrition Services

The Nutrition Services Department at UCSF Medical Center provides comprehensive nutrition consultation services for patients of all ages, in both inpatient and outpatient settings.  Whether providing medical nutrition therapy at the bedside or giving nutrition education and counseling in the clinic, our team of registered dietitians and dietetic technicians provides patient-centered care for recovery, growth, and overall health.

UCSF registered dietitians (RDs) and dietetic technicians, registered (DTRs) provide nutrition care in collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams across the health system.  We excel in evidence-based care for patients admitted to our inpatient units at Parnassus, Mission Bay, and Mount Zion hospitals as well as patients seen in our outpatient clinics throughout the Bay Area.

Our staff includes RDs who specialize in pediatric and adult medical nutrition therapy for the inpatient and outpatient populations served by UCSF Medical Center.  Medical nutrition therapy performed by RDs involves screening for nutrition risk, assessing a patient’s nutritional status, developing individualized nutrition care plans, and monitoring clinical outcomes.

Our staff also includes DTRs who work alongside RDs in collecting information from patients, assisting patients with menu selections, calculating calorie counts, planning complex modified diets, monitoring patient nutrient intake, and providing patient education.
